CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
SNOWPLOW SAM LEVELS 1-3: Ages 3-5 years old. All Snowplow Sam classes are 25 minutes. The Snowplow Sam levels are designed to help the preschool age skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice. Time with Snowplow Sam will allow preschool children to become comfortable on the ice. Snowplow Sam level 1 is for skaters who have never had lessons. HELMETS RECOMMENDED
BASIC 1-BASIC 8: Ages 6 and up. All Basic 1 through Basic 8 classes are 25 minutes and include a 25 minute practice. The “Basic Skills” are the fundamentals of the sport. These eight levels of the program introduce the fundamental moves-forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, crossovers, turns, mohawks. Upon completion of the Basic 1-8 levels, skaters will have the basic knowledge of the sport enabling them to advance to the more specialized areas of skating. Basic 1 is for skaters who have never had lessons. (Ages 6 and up)
FREESTYLE 1 through Freestyle 6: Skaters are always excited to graduate from the Basics to the Freestyle levels. Each Freestyle level is divided into 4 sections: *Moves in the Field *Dance/Footwork sequence *Spins *Jumps. The Freestyle levels are designed to give skaters a strong foundation on which to build their skills. This is the point where the skater can decide whether to pursue a recreational or competitive approach to the sport of figure skating.
GROUP STROKING AND EDGE CLASS – This is a fun class for all Basic 4 thru Juvenile level skaters. Step sequences will be taught and done with music. This is a 25 min. group class. Skaters will be grouped by level. Adults Welcome!
LO OPEN PRACTICE ICE: This is a great time to practice your skills and have a private lesson. Skaters under 6 years old who are in Basic 4 and under must be on lesson with a coach and may purchase half of the session to coordinate with their lesson time.
ADULTS and TEENS: All Summer classes are 25 minutes and include a 25 minute practice. Adult levels 1-4 are designed for the beginner adult skater. It will promote physical fitness improve balance and coordination while learning proper skating techniques. Divided into four levels, adult skaters will progress at an individual rate while being challenged and motivated. This is an exciting program for people who look to skating as an enjoyable way for a fit and healthy lifestyle.
BOOSTER PRIVATE LESSONS: Booster private lessons are given by instructors to any skater enrolled in a group class. The purpose of a booster lesson is to give the student extra help if the student is having trouble with a maneuver to help a skater advance more quickly. Payments are made directly to the instructor of your choice. Price range is $16.00 - 24.00 per 20 min. lesson.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION – READ BEFORE 1st CLASS!
SKATES/CLOTHING: NO DOUBLE RUNNERS! Skates typically fit a size to a size and a half SMALLER than shoe size and should be fit and worn with one thin sock. A limited number of rental skates are available for a small fee. As skaters progress, a more supportive skate and better quality blade is needed. Good fitting skates are available at; Play It Again Sports in Portland and Sports East in Topsham. Guards, soakers and gloves are available in the rink pro shop. Skaters should dress comfortably and in warm layers. Gloves or mittens are needed year round.
SHARPENING: Skates should be sharpened every 10-15 times on the ice.
GUARDS: Skate guards should be worn while walking on pavement, mats, etc.
SOAKERS: Soakers are soft guards that are to be used on your skaters after drying the blades with a soft towel.
PARENTS: Parents are NOT allowed on the ice during class times. Parents are invited to watch, however we ask that you please sit in the bleachers, or in the viewing area located on the second floor. Parents standing next to the doorway are a distraction to their children, other skaters and coaches. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of class.

All Basic 1-8, and Freestyle 1 classes consist of a 25 min. lesson and a 25 min. practice session. All Adults and Freestyle 2 and higher classes are 30 min. Snowplow Sam classes are 25 min. Snowplow Sam level 1 is for skaters ages 3-5 who have never had lessons. Basic 1 is for skaters ages 6 and older who have never had instruction. Helmets are strongly recommended for all skaters 6 years old and younger. BRING MITTENS or GLOVES for all classes.

**North Atlantic Figure Skating offers additional practice ice Mon-Fri June 23rd - August 22nd , 8:10am – 12:00 noon (more or less).
